My parents were in town this week which meant my wife and I had eager, free babysitters. So we went downtown last night for dinner and drinks. The end of August in Durham always seems extra crowded as all the students are back in town; we drove around for a a few minutes trying to find parking that wasn’t too much of a walk and finally scored some street parking by the train tracks.
When you don’t get too many kid-free evening, the number of things to do downtown can seem overwhelming, so we spent about fifteen minutes walking around trying to decide where to eat. Finally we walked back uptown intending to grab food at Tan-Durm, the curry-making food truck we’d driven past at the big grassy corner of Main and Chapel Hill in Durham’s Central Park neighborhood. Whatever curry-type food they were making smelled amazing, but we got way-laid by Bull McCabe’s Irish Pub on the way down to the picnic tables. We sat down, ordered beers from their sizable menu, and split a Cubano sandwich. We’ll have to track down Tan-Durm at wherever they park next. But it was just a nice, relaxing couple of hours sitting outside and enjoying the city. I love the evenings in North Carolina at this time of year – it’s cool and breezy but still feels like summer.
